“Take care of your eyes because they are your windows to the world.”

What are toric lenses for?

Contact lens is a very important invention. It all began with glasses, but there are a lot of things that are more advantageous at contacts than at glasses. Glasses are old fashioned and hard to wear, while contacts are light and you don’t even notice that you wear them.

The first contacts were made from glass and they were a bit uncomfortable. Also they were designed to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness. Back then even this meant a lot and contacts became popular. With time more and more types of contact lenses were developed and it became possible to cure different eye problems. Different materials were used and with time contacts became comfortable and gas permeable.

A common eye problem is astigmatism. Although this is a common illness, many don’t know what it is. Astigmatism can occur when you have a bad shaped cornea or a bad shaped lens behind the cornea. If you have astigmatism, you will notice that the picture you see is blurry. Blurry vision can cause headache after a long day. Astigmatism can also come along with near- or farsightedness. If you have small astigmatism, you probably won’t even notice anything, just headaches. If you have more serious problems, the vision of your eyes will have to be corrected.

To correct astigmatism, scientists made the toric contact. This contact lens is made from the same materials like the other lenses. Differences are in the shape of the lens. A toric contact has a special shape and it’s made of multiple lenses. It was designed to correct myopia or hyperopia besides astigmatism. This results on the form of the lens. The toric contact has two powers on it so it’s not allowed to rotate like the normal spherical lenses. This is why this type of lens has two zones on it that help stabilize the lens.

Toric lenses have spread and you can now find them everywhere. Different types of materials make possible the existence of disposable toric lenses. This means that you can drop the lenses after a shorter wear period. Because toric lenses are designed to correct vision, the longer wear of such a lens can even cure your eye. This can only happen if you have small astigmatism, otherwise your vision will become clear but your eyes are not curable. Depending on your needs and the level of comfort, you have a large scale of toric lenses to choose from.
